This is an amazing autobiography about Joseph Kim, a North Korean refugee. He was starving in North Korea with his mother, father and sister. His father died of starvation, and his mother escaped to China and sold his sister. She was caught and put in jail. Joseph is a thief in the local markets that still have food, until he meets a childhood friend and is accepted into a gang, which is the only way to survive without a lot of money. Eventually, he was caught by the North Korean authorities and forced to go to school. He miraculously escaped into China and started working for a woman. He gets a chance to go to America, so he does.
